The traces of 'La Penal' In the jungles of the Ecuadorian Amazon there was already a prison. In the administration of the former president, Gabriel García Moreno (1861-1865 and 1869-1875), dozens of prisoners from Quito were transferred to the mountains, while the García Moreno prison was remodeled. In what is now the Cumandá parish, in Palora, province of Morona Santiago. The expenal operated there, known as 'La Penal', a name that served to baptize the town. The prisoners had to plant crops to eat. the Pastaza River, at that time very feared for its mighty waters, and for the narrow roads in the middle of the mountain through Tungurahua. La Penal, a parish located five minutes from Mera (Pastaza), had no enclosures, because the Government did not have money and that is why the prisoners had to build their own cabins to withstand the inclement weather. Also to avoid being eaten by jungle animals. The prisoners had to plant crops to eat and even managed to build a pool to bathe in, since going swimming in the river represented certain death, although some tried to escape. The expenal operated until 1946 in the Cumandá parish, in Morona Santiago.
